Coat Color and Pattern in English Shepherds
The red tricolor pattern is due to the action of a recessive allele
at the "Brown" (B) locus, modifying the appearance of a "typical"
black/tan or tricolor pattern.
If a dog inherits two copies of the recessive "b" allele,
they will produce brown pigment in areas that would otherwise be black.
This brown pigment is called different things in different breeds
-- in spaniels, it is referred to as "liver"; in labrador
retrievers, it is called "chocolate"; in English Shepherds,
it is generally referred to as "red". Because "red"
is a recessive trait, red pups may be produced by parents who produce
normal black pigment themselves but who carry the recessive allele.
