Coat Color and Pattern in English Shepherds

Piebald pattern (overlaying saddle markings)

The piebald pattern is due to the action of a recessive allele at the white spotting (S) gene locus. Dogs that inherit two copies of the piebald allele will have extensive white markings, with large patches of color interspersed.

Because the piebald allele (s^p) is relatively recessive, it may result from the crossing of two parents who individually have little or no white themselves, but who each carry the piebald allele.
