Trait Evaluation
Dog's name: Quigley Downs
<Pedigree: in ESCR database>
Owned by: Greg and Julia Downs
Background:
Quigley is a sable/ white, intact male, born in August 2006 and
evaluated at 2 1/2 years of age. Quigley lives on his owner's farm
in Kansas and has been exposed to livestock work -- with range beef
cattle -- since he was a small pup.
He is a loving, loyal friend and family member; his intelligence
and integrity is paired with natural good manners -- except with
coyotes. He occasionally takes his responsibility to chase off coyotes
farther afield than his owners feel is safe, but apart from that
he minds and respects the boundaries presented to him.
Summary of Quigley's Working Traits:
Keenness/ Drive -- works readily when needed
Style -- Quigley has been trained to work while his owner rides
along on horseback on large acreage
pastures, and will either contain, drive
or simply spread the cattle out easily then quit when told.
Both Quigley and the horse know their
jobs and are also working partners.
Power -- livestock respect Quigley
Stock
Ethic -- maintains control appropriately, without causing undue
stress
Work Ethic -- stays with the job and maintains focus
Biddability
-- very responsive to guidance and control, particularly as he matures;
he has always
listened well and tried to do what was
asked of him.
Approach -- moderately wide
"Eye" -- medium (fairly intense concentration, but upright
and free-moving)
Bark -- force barks, but only if truly necessary
Bite -- bites as needed, which is seldom, generally at heel or just
above hock
Orientation -- livestock come second to his owner
Territoriality -- respects boundaries and stays at home
Patrol -- patrols constantly
Warning -- barks, or comes to find (and nudge) his owner, to warn
of unusual situations
Defense of property -- staunchly defends his owner's property
Defense of people -- diligently protects his owner
Tracking ability -- will track by scent and find prey
Predators -- drives off predators
Attitude towards newborns -- gentle and/or protective manner with
newborns
Pest control -- routinely hunts rodents
Structure and Movement: Quigley is the fastest, smoothest
moving dog his owners have been around. He has an average build
with muscular hips and thighs, and a natural bobtail. He is an exceptional
jumper with excellent speed and agility. His coat is silky and low
maintenance -- "the dirt just falls off". He has a correct
scissors bite.
Temperament: Quigley is confident but moderately reserved
with strangers, hanging back rather than approaching for attention.
He is very devoted and affectionate with family. He is active with
an eager but calm, steady disposition. He responds quicky to pressure.
