Photos of Old Fashioned Collie/ Shepherd Dogs

One subject which frequently causes confusion among people new to the breed is what distinguishes the English Shepherd from a "farm collie." For an insightful overview that clears up some of the confusion surrounding the term "farm collie," see this essay by Gina Bisco. There is a helpful diagram by Linda Rorem depicting the relationships between the various branches of the Collie family tree online here .

This beautiful old fashioned collie was photographed in approximately 1913... both photos feature Jan, the collie, enjoying a litter of kittens.

These two photos of black/white collie type dogs date from 1905 (photo on left) and 1865 (photo on right). At first glance, it may appear that the same dog is pictured in both, however if you look more closely the dog on the left has more white on his legs. Not to mention the photos were taken 40 years apart..!

On the left, another kitten-loving collie-type dog...

Photo on the right depicts a "collie" from 1893.
